Austin - Horse Incident (With Picture)

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that it's always an exciting day

at our house. Today we feature Austin Bryce Crossley,

the little brother (10 years old) of Hannah.

· · · · ·

Austin is smart, funny, caring,

active, creative, a good brother,

athletic, and inquisitive. However,

Austin is not a professional horse

back rider.

· · · · ·

On Thursday, Austin was at a friends house. They have a

horse, He got on the horse. He rode the horse. He fell

off the horse.

I promised Austin that I would post his picture. I’m not

sure if he wants to scare you or just show off his “war”

wounds.

Thanx,

I want to give special thanx to Nathan and Carolyn and Danny Freeman. When this event happened, Becky was with Hannah @ Sloan, in the city, with no car in which to return to Goshen. I was in Orlando, Florida on a business trip with the car at the airport. Danny and Carolyn rushed to Arden Hill to oversee the situation and “just be with Austin”. Nathan also rushed to the hospital and provided comfort and support. Over the course of the next 4 hours, as Carolyn stayed with Hannah, Danny drove Nathan down to Sloan, to stay with Hannah, returning back to Goshen with Becky.

· · · · ·

Also, thank you to Kim for rushing Austin to the hospital and staying with him during the surgery process.

· · · · ·

Thank you to Annette, who was on duty at the ER, for helping us understand the nature of the injuries.

· · · · ·

Last but not least, thank you to all the doctors, technitions, & nurses who helped Austin in his hour of need. We seem to be thanking a lot of people for help and support to our family. I guess this means that we live in a wonderful town and have great friends.

WARNING – Icky Detail Stuff to Follow:

Below I have listed some of the details of his medical situation. Please note that they can be kind of “gooey”:

· Austin underwent several hours of surgery at Arden Hill Hospital. He also had subsequent meetings with a dentist and oral surgeon.>

· Prior to the surgery, a cat scan was conducted due to the belief that he had a concussion.

· Austin broke his nose into several pieces, his nose cartilage was miss aligned and needed to be “adjusted”.

· During surgery, the surgeon discovered that his face, from the upper gums to well into the nose area, was “de-Gloved”. Are you ready for this --- De-Gloving process means the fall tore his face away from the bone. The majority of the surgery was reattaching stuff.

· During the De-Gloving process, Austin’s two naisel passages became one large opening. Amazing when you really think about it.

· Austin also suffered a laceration on the out side of his nose, separating a sizable flap of material that needed quite a few stitches for reattachments.

· There are additional areas of stitches elsewhere on his face ie.. chin, eyebrow, side of nose.

· Austin lost two (2) teeth.

· Four (4) additional teeth are very loose and one, a front upper, will not likely survive.

· The dentist also indicated that he will need a root canal on at lease one tooth.

· The oral surgeon discovered that Austin’s upper jaw , right above the tooth line, is shattered. As he tried to push the loose teeth up into the gums, they kept slipping back down because the area of gum and bone structure was mushy.

· The oral surgeon inset a bracket around his side and upper teeth, all the loose ones, in an attempt to hold them in place and hopefully save them. This process will mean that Austin will be on a liquid diet for 3-4 weeks.

· We were instructed that he will most likely need several surgical procedures as he grows older (5-7 years from now) to address some of the issues with his front teeth.

· Austin had significant and sometimes deep “road rash” over most of his body, front, back, shoulders, legs.

· And of course – he has a pretty good amount of swelling on his face and discomfort from the road rash.
