April 6, 2007 Surgery Postponed

This week we were once again reminded that we do not run cancer, cancer runs us. Hannah’s surgery has had to be postponed, possibly for a month, because she may have come down with a case of shingles. We spent the day at Sloan yesterday, seeing doctors and having x-rays and bloodwork, and Hannah had her second treatment. At around 5:15, when they were taking her last vial of blood, I noticed a small rash on her stomach, and asked a simple question, “Hannah, what is this?” It is amazing how many doctors and nurses are still on the floor that late in the day, and all of them were crowded around poor Hannah. Because of the possibility that it is shingles, it was too risky to have surgery. The team took a culture and we will wait for the results to confirm shingles. Hannah was put on an anti-viral medication and is confined to the house until the rash dries up. Hopefully, she will be okay to have another treatment in 2 weeks, and surgery will be rescheduled soon after. Hannah (with her positive outlook, and I, emotionally drained) returned home last night and she woke up with a fever this morning. We are keeping an eye on her and hopefully, she will not have to be taken back down to Sloan. Please pray that this newest obstacle can be quickly resolved, and surgery can be rescheduled within a month.

Our family would like to wish all of you a very Blessed Easter.
